This workshop will teach participants how to weave work with out the use of a standard floor loom, using basketry, macrame, sewing and other binding techniques to create projects made of Fiber and found objects. We will draw inspiration from the work of artists such as Nick Cave, Magdalena Abakanowitz, and El Anatsui. Student will be encouraged to bring found objects with them for this once a week exploration into off loom weaving techniques. We will create at least six distinct projects with the opportunity use combined skills and/or materials for additional projects if time allows. Each class is an individual project and technique, so it is not required to take all 6 sessions, but it is helpful to use many of the skills at once!
*Materials provided for all sessions, but students are free to bring their own.
SESSION 1:
Using “Moon Worshiper” by Tadek Beutlich as an inspiration, we will experiment with different finger weaving and crochet techniques to create our own fabric sculpture, emphasizing differentiation in textures and sizes of stitches.
