This series of collage based black and white photographs focuses on the artists’ fascination with American structures of power and control as well as the interplay of the fossil fuel industry and the environment.

Shawn Bush’s Angle of Draw critically interrogates the constructs of American masculinity, violence, and cultural mythmaking—systems deeply intertwined with patriarchy. Through a sharply layered photographic practice, Bush deconstructs the aesthetics of control, militarism, and the illusion of dominance embedded in American visual culture.

Angle of Draw exposes the fragile underpinnings of patriarchal power itself. Bush’s work challenges the glorified narratives of masculinity and conquest, showing how these ideals are manufactured, maintained, and often implode under their own contradictions. Angle of Draw examines how those same systems distort and damage the identities of those conditioned to uphold them.

Shawn Bush is a lens-based artist who grew up in Detroit, MI. The city’s civic history and geographic location have greatly influenced his understanding of physical space within American sociopolitical and socioeconomic landscapes. Consequently, his photographs and collages reflect overdeveloped systems, distorted icons, and collapsing mythologies.

Bush earned an MFA from RISD and a BA from Columbia College Chicago. His work has appeared in various publications, including Wallpaper Magazine, Wired Magazine, FotoFilmic’s JRNL, and Vogue. He has lectured nationally at several universities and art institutions, including Yale University, the University of Missouri, and the Los Angeles Center for Photography. The artist is currently based in Casper, WY.
