You Are the Curator is a weeklong art exploration at MoA where campers learn about unexpected global museums,
with activities and workshops creating their own masterpieces and tiny galleries with
explorations into museums hidden deep in the ocean, at desert festivals, and even on the moon.
Daily Schedule:
1:00-3:00: Explore the many types of museums with Shawn Bowman
3:00-3:30: Snack served (avoiding any specified allergies)
3:30-5:00: Outside time right next to MoA in Oak Street Plaza along with open arts time and fun art based games
Monday: Kid Curator
Why do people collect and display things? We’ll take virtual tours to remarkable museums
around the world including the Ice Cream Museum, Hair Museum, the British Museum even
the moon! Along the way we’ll talk about the ethics of displaying objects and make our own
tiny museum to take home.
Tuesday: Underwater Museums and Explorations
During this session we’ll look at art underwater sculptors and how the work they create is
shaped by the ocean and the environment, giving them a platform to raise awareness on big
issues. We’ll make art from recycled items that might wash up on a beach, take home our
own miniature aquarium and go on a VR trip to help scientists map underwater soundscapes.
Wednesday: Art Cars and Roadside Museums
From lowriders to Burning Man Art Cars, we’ll explore all the ways people personalize and
embellish their vehicles as well as VR tours of car museums looking at vehicle design through
the ages. We’ll make our own crazy art cars and an interactive map where we’ll visit the
museums our friends in camp have built.
Thursday: Mail Art
During the 1970’s a group of artists decided that cool work should be accessible to everyone,
without needing to be in a museum or on display. They felt a piece shared between two
friends was just as important as something in a gallery and sent art to each other in the mail.
Today we’ll look at some of the fun and crazy things they made and make our own mail art to
send our notes from camp.
Friday: Graffiti Arts
Today we’re playing with all kinds of urban art from creating our own graffiti letters, stickers
even temporary tattoos. Along the way we’ll look at the influential artists who’ve transformed
this notorious artform to multimillion dollar gallery installations.
