Art is the essence of awareness

Making marks with needle and thread, focusing on the color, shape, line and pattern of the stitches can be a mindful experience. The practice of mindful stitching can become a space for calm spontaneous creativity. Making intuitive aesthetic choices gives voice to your inner creative self that can quiet mental chatter. In this workshop the first aesthetic choice will be to pick a vintage linen that resonates with you and inspires ideas. The goal of this workshop is not to walk away with a recipe for a finished work of embroidery, but to gain the tools for mindful mark making that celebrates the creative process.
You will explore a variety of straightforward embroidery techniques and experiment with thinking protocols to tap into your creative self. We will begin class by exploring the current exhibition Play Nice by artist Bonnie Lebesch to gather inspiration for our own stitching ideas. All levels of stitching ability are celebrated and welcome, no experience is needed, regardless if you are a seasoned embroiderer or just beginning, this workshop will offer resources to practice mindful art making.
Mindful Stitching I: Wednesday, February 5th 5:30-8pm – This session is for folks new to this workshop or those who want a refresher and extra time to explore. Basic stitching materials, tools and vintage linens will be provided. Please bring a sketchbook, and personal sewing tools if you prefer.
Mindful Stitching II: Wednesday, February 19th 5:30-8pm – This session will be a continuation of Mindful Stitching I with new inspiration, stitches and ideas. Basic stitching materials and tools provided. Encouraged to bring a sketchbook and the vintage linen from the Mindful Stitching I class or bring your own personal fabric to explore. Participants are also encouraged to start your own embroidery floss collection with colors that inspire you and your own sewing needles that work best you you.
