Female Artists: Raising the Ghosts of the Past
This is a four part lecture series led by artist Lisa Nevot. One and a half hours long, you will learn about the life and art of female artists that have been forgotten by history. Seats are limited so join quickly!
We all know the masters through the literature and marketing of today’s societies; the highest valued and collected painters are passed away, a part of our history.
And they are primarily men.
In this four part lecture series, we will uncover female artists buried by history.
Raising the ghosts of the past- who were they?
Our first artist we will discover is Hilma AF Klint.
Born 26 October 1862, she was an artist and mystic whose paintings are considered among the first abstract works known in Western art history. A considerable body of her work predates the first purely abstract compositions by Kandinsky, and Mondrian. Many of them hidden away from society. Hilda belonged to a group called “The Five”, comprising a circle of women inspired by Theosophy, who shared a belief in the importance of trying to contact the so-called “High Masters”—often by way of séances. Her paintings, which sometimes resemble diagrams, were a visual representation of complex spiritual ideas.
Let’s take a look at these paintings and discuss her ideas and how they resonate with today.
Keep an eye out for future parts of the series!
