Block Printing: Basics

This multi-session workshop is designed to introduce participants to the art of linoleum block printing, a relief printmaking technique that involves carving a design onto a linoleum or similar surface, and then using that carved block to print the image onto paper or fabric.

During the first session, you’ll also get an introduction to the tools and materials used in block printing, such as carving tools, inking brayers, and various types of printing paper and fabric.

In the second session, you’ll dive into the hands-on process of designing and carving your own linoleum block. The instructor will guide you through techniques for transferring your design onto the linoleum, as well as proper carving methods to create raised and recessed areas that will hold and release the printing ink.

Once your block is carved, you’ll learn how to properly ink the surface and then print your design onto paper or fabric by hand-burnishing. The instructor will cover troubleshooting tips for common printing issues, such as uneven ink coverage or misregistration.

The goal is for you to leave with a solid understanding of the block printing process and a portfolio of your own unique, hand-printed creations.

The workshop is designed to be both educational and inspiring, drawing influence from nature, historical block printing traditions, and cultural motifs to fuel your creativity. Whether you’re a seasoned printmaker or a complete beginner, this series of classes promises to be a fun and immersive introduction to the world of block printing.

About Instructor: Christina Pureski

Bio: I am a self-taught queer multimedia artist with a focus on linoleum block printing, pyrography, and sewing. Learning new mediums and art forms is my jam! Since moving to Fort Collins in 2021, I have been heavily involved in the art community and have developed a passion for working with the public.
