Al Petteway is a Grammy Award-winning guitarist known for his lyrical and powerful fingerstyle acoustic guitar playing and memorable original compositions that reveal his love of Celtic, Appalachian and Blues music. In addition to seventeen albums and six instructional videos released under his own name, his playing has been featured on dozens of other recordings by some of the best-known artists in the Folk and Celtic music genres.
Al’s music is heard prominently on the soundtracks of several of Ken Burns’ PBS documentaries, most notably the Emmy-winning series “The National Parks-America’s Best idea” which featured his compositions throughout.
He was voted one of the “Top Fifty Acoustic Guitarists of All Time” by the readers of Acoustic Guitar Magazine and was given the title of “Master Music Maker” by Warren Wilson College and the Swannanoa Gathering music camp in celebration of a lifetime of musicianship and teaching.
Al lives high in the mountains of Western North Carolina near Asheville with his wife and musical partner Amy White.
